I recently contracted Insulation Installers Scotland to fit loft insulation & internal wall insulation in my top-floor tenement flat in a conservation area. I secured funding through Home Energy Scotland. Although the quote that Calum provided was higher than the quote from another, Calum went out of his way to spend time walking me through the pros and cons of different insulation/plaster types for older properties, and I decided to give him my business. My exetranal/cold walls were stripped back
to stone, a lime plaster parge was applied, walls were battened with 100mm wool insulation installed, wood wool boarding was installed on top of the insulation and a lime plaster skim appplied to all freshly boarded walls. Calum provided advice on recommened paints for lime plaster and helped arrange a post-installaton EPC. The fitting teams arrived on time, worked hard and were always polite & friendly. A couple of challenges arose during the project due to previous water ingress and window fitters not installing on time, but Calum and the team showed great flexibility to complete the installation on time and accommodate other contractors. I would highly recommend Calum and his team at Insulation Installers Scotland.

I have nothing but positive things to say about Calum and the team at Insulation Installers Scotland. They are very professional and genuinely care about the customer. Calum was a pleasure to deal with, he visited our house and carried out a thorough assessment of our property. He talked us through what was required and sent us a very detailed quotation. He was also a great help in advising us how to go about applying for a grant through Home Energy Scotland. When Lyall and Chris arrived at the house to start the work, the first thing they did was take their shoes off and lay down plastic all the way through the hall and upstairs to protect the floors - an early sign of how tidy and efficient they were. Every day they turned up on time, took great care, worked long days and barely looked like they took a break! We are very happy with the outcome and our house is so much warmer, the difference is incredible, especially through these recent winter months. Also worth pointing out that Calum recommended his associate Craig who carried out our EPC at a reasonable price and at the same time provided us with a bespoke plan on how best to heat our home, keeping the bills lower and the warmth higher - he has got it absolutely spot on! Finally, we had a delay in our grant from Home Energy Scotland however Calum remained very patient and helped us speed the process up. Thanks guys, we really appreciate everything, Gordon & Nikki.

I had my attic room and living room floor insulated by Calum and his team about 18 months ago in November 2023. Calum and his team were all easy to deal with, friendly and left the house in good order when the work was completed.

Unfortunately about a year after the work had been done, I had cause to lift some of the floorboards myself. When I did this I found that the underfloor space was damp. After investigating further I found that during the installation Calum's team had blocked the airbricks/ventilation at the front of the house by stuffing it with insulation and had done the same at the rear of the living room, preventing air movement from the rear of the house. This is a very basic error to make and it was particularly frustrating as Calum had mentioned the need to maintain ventilation before the job and I had discussed it again with the team whilst they were on site.

I called Calum and - to his credit - he agreed to send somebody to look at it next day. Again the team were very pleasant but in my view were too gung-ho about fixing it without undertaking a proper investigation. As a result after a slightly disagreeable phone call with Calum I sought a second opinion from a surveyor and did the remedial work myself.

In terms of customer service Calum and his team did a lot right. However I can't overlook such a basic error as it suggests something is wrong with both the training and the quality control at the company. In my case I was lucky as the problem was identified before any serious damage had been done, however it could easily have been much more costly and problematic.

Short edit in response to Calum's reply:

There are two air bricks at the front, the channels through the wall to both of these had been stuffed full of insulation. The ventilation channels to the rear of the room had also been blocked with insulation. I cleared those at the front before I even contacted Calum to let him know there was a problem as it was so obviously wrong. I identified and cleared those at the rear later when I was remediating the issue.

For the benefit of other homeowners I would simply note that a good installation would include checking the ventilation paths from the airbricks through to the subfloor and ensuring these were clear and adequate before the installation commenced and then validating that they remained clear after the installation. I’ve had cavity wall installed by Insulation Installers Scotland. The hardworking team turned up (the two cavity wall installers had driven up from Swansea) and went above and beyond to do the works. There was good pre-installation support too, and all my questions and concerns were answered.

Insulation Installers turned up when they said they would, completed the work in a timely fashion and to a good standard. The workpeople they sent were also polite and good natured. They were patient with me as I applied for the home energy Scotland grant prior to commencing the work. This was for underfloor insulation in my pre-1914 tenement flat.

Although I haven't had it done yet, I have also asked a lot of different companies for internal wall insulation and these folks were the only ones that understood the problems of insulating old buildings. This is also backed up by their good reputation in the Glasgow retrofit community.
