Fantastic one-day course with Rachel - a good refresher on scythe anatomy and assembly (and micro-adjustments), great practical mowing tuition, and then a simply superb introduction (hands on!) to the dark arts of peening. Highly, highly recommended.

Went on a scything course and really enjoyed it. For a beginner, the teaching level was just right and gave me the information I needed to get the confidence to "give it a try" for myself. The course was very friendly, not scary (!) and also very safe scythes are dangerous!!). In short it was spot on for what I needed and Rachel was an excellent and approachable tutor

Rachel delivered a very informative and practical scythe course, in a relaxed manner.
I didn't realise using and maintaining a Scythe was so technical. Though rewarding.

I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the Scything Course at the Vyne. Rachel is an excellent teacher. There was useful information about scything and meadows as practical scything in the beautiful grounds. Recommended.

Really enjoyable course learning how to scythe. Rachel is extremely knowledgeable and the difference between the start of the day and the end was amazing, learning how to setup the scythe properly, techniques and sharpening all delivered in a clear and concise way. Highly recommend!

As a girl I would watch my Grandfather scything on his land and the verges, ditches and graveyard nearby and it looked so easy that when I was a teenager and into Tess of the D'Urbervilles and other rural 'romantic' novels I asked him to teach me. I was ridiculous and he laughed and scratched his head and I stomped off. So 45 years later my damaged pride dealt with I signed up for a day with Rachel.
Even the journey to the farm was ravishing.. a valley of wild garlic, a traffic jam of ducklings and then the meadow we were to mow rolling around us patched with cowslip and pens of sheep who regularly commented on our progress.
We began by getting to know our scythe. Not the curved English scythe I was familiar with but a straighter, lighter Austrian one. We were shown how to put it together to suit our height and swing and there was much chat about safety as it is after all the accessory of choice for The Grim Reaper!
Just before lunch we had our first go at mowing in the orchard. And it's tricky! But not once did Rachel shake her head and chuckle at our incompetence! No! Instead she was gently encouraging and endlessly patient and demonstrated and guided us in the ways to hold the scythe and how to alter it and balance ourselves and practice the low arcing swing (not the machete hacking thrashes of Poldark) and how to move slowly and let the weight of the tool do the work as well as all the while sharing her wealth of knowledge about land management and her love and respect for nature.
After lunch we moved into the larger meadow and began mowing next to each other and Rachel explained how teams of mowers would work together mowing in strips moving slowly and steadily until large swathes of grass had been cut.
We sharpened the blades regularly with whetstones whilst mowing and gradually the steady movement across the land, the gentle sound of the arcing blade slicing through the grass, the birdsong and the eventually approving murmers of the sheep came together with a rather wondrous natural ancient rhythm and I felt for a moment like my Grandad used to look and for that I wholeheartedly thank Rachel and her kindness and her patient sharing of her knowledge and skill.
We spent the last hour peening the blade with a small anvil and hammer and cleaning and disassembling the handsome scythe.
When Rachel said it was time to go home I didn't want to go.
I thoroughly recommend Rachel Remnant. Through her I was reconnected to my past and to the land and it was perfect.
I intend to keep mowing until I'm 100 just like my lovely old Granddad did.

I attended the Land Lore Scything course. It was good fun, very useful and informative. Excellent personal tuition from a skilled and experienced teacher - much more effective than trying to learn this from books and videos. Practical and useful. Highly recommended.

We hired Rachel as a consultant for our vast overgrown back garden space and front garden, which we wanted to make into a haven for wildlife.
Rachel helped us bring an overgrown area of our garden back into our lives. She carefully cut back the brambles, avoiding disturbance to wildlife. She is helping us establish a wood meadow under the trees. Her initial consultation and ongoing updates have reconnected us with this special place and given us confidence to manage it. It's amazing learning how valuable our urban habitats are. We have noticed so many more birds coming into our garden, which is a delight! Thank you Rachel
